Freeligion:
When did you start producing and what was the reason you started?

ohbliv:
I began making pause tapes for myself, looping up records from my pops collection. As an only child, to entertain myself as a hobby, out of curiosity i guess. There were no grand epiphanies or anything like that, it just seemed like the natural thing to do, just create.

Freeligion:
Was there someone or some event that really pushed you to start?

ohbliv:
I’m blessed my parents exposed me to a wide variety of music. As a child i heard RnB, Jazz, Rock and Funk. I do remember the first time i heard PE and Ultramagnetic MC’s Critical Beatdown which really made me think i could do this music.

Freeligion:
Your sound is mellow and very relaxing. Does that resonate with your lifestyle?

ohbliv:
Juggling duties working, being a father and husband, and managing this music thing, it can get hectic but when I’m creating it is a way to escape. But overall I’m a mellow type of fellow and I guess you can hear that in the music..

Freeligion:
Not only is your style chill, but it is very deliberate. What kind of messages do you send through your music?

ohlibv:
There seems to be some sort of collective amnesia these days, about a lot of things, but musically a lot of folks seem to forget about a time before ProTools, how about before computers? With the advances in technology a lot of music today is so sterile and mechanical. I say everything doesn’t have to sound clean. We need more emotional content. Sound is vibration, so in addition to music being heard, it should be felt. I want the listeners to know that even if we use electronics and technology we can still express our humanity.

Freeligion:
Can you explain the name ohbliv?

ohbliv:
I used to rap and I’m a fan of the film Videodrome and the name represents my mind state when it comes to music, I’m oblivious to what most is going on musically, I just do my own thing.

Freeligion:
You’ve developed a great following on soundcloud and tumblr, tell us about that process and how your fan feedback has been.

ohbliv:
It’s been humbling and cool. I gotta give credit to my homie Ahnnu who put me on to tumblr way back when it was just starting to pop, but it’s been real cool to find people who dig the random pictures or beats. I mean, when i started i had no expectations, so just to see all the people who dig has been cool.

Freeligion:
Do you have upcoming plans to work with emcees or singers?

ohbliv:
I’ve got some things in the works with some emcee’s that hopefully the world will hear soon.

Freeligion:
Any upcoming shows in the Virginia area or around the world?

ohbliv:
Jan 12th I will be in Asheville NC with Nigel One, Proflogik, Herobust. Hopefully an east coast tour or some more shows out west in 2012.

Freeligion:
